From the 28^th of March till the 14^th of June The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle offers a unique opportunity to take a closer look at the most significant British portrait photographers of the 20^th century, Cecil Beaton. The exhibition displays more than 80 portraits of famous Hollywood stars, international artists and influential politicians. The photographs are on loan from National Portrait Gallery in London and will be shown for the first time in Denmark.

 
   

The exhibition shows a wide selection of Beaton’s portraits of the many celebrity figures that symbolize Hollywood’s golden era. With Beaton’s exceptional flair for staging, he came very close to the people he portrayed and were able to show new sides of some of Hollywood’s greatest stars such as Johnny Weissmuller, Greta Garbo, Laurence Olivier, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Ingrid Bergman.

 
   

Beaton’s great sense of glamour did not stop him from investigating the face of power in several unique portraits of some of the most influential persons in the 20^th century. Many will recognize the iconic portrait from 1940 of Winston Churchill in his Downing Street office. Beaton also portrayed the British royal family, and the portraits of Queen Elizabeth II offers a touching glimpse of a young woman with an exceptional destiny, seen through the lense of a brilliant photographer.

 
   

Cecil Beaton renewed the photograph with his iconic portraits through more than 50 years. With that, the exhibition also functions as a cultural stroll through the 20^th century – from Beatons early inter-war portraits of Fred Astaire and Pablo Picasso, his famous war photographs from the Second World War, his masterly presentation of the golden era of Hollywood and his sense of the whole new cultural direction in the 60’s and 70’s. Harold Pinter, Barbara Streisand and Mick Jagger are only a few of the Beaton models from these decades.
